Re-instatement of Gazelle SG as PRE Planting Treatment for the Control of Hylobius abeitis

The approval conditions closely reflect the previous off label approval, but require a month to elapse between treatment and planting to protect birds and non target soil insects. This will mean that forest nurseries will require at least one month's notice prior to the delivery of treated plants.

Although nurseries are likely to be able to manage this one month interval requirement through the use of cold storage with bare root transplants, the logistics for treating, handling and cold storage of cell grown plugs is likely to be logistically more complex, so may make this use of Gazelle unattractive to some nurseries.

There should be no forest management certification implications from this use of Gazelle, as the actual insecticide application will be in the forest nursery, and not in the forest.

There are two principal benefits resulting from this re-introduction:

1. As only two applications of Lanzarta can be made during the establishment of the crop, then a pre-planting Gazelle, will permit the use of Lanzarta as a summer spray for second generation weevils, plus a further application of Lanzarta in the year after planting. A Forester application may then be made should a year two summer spray be required. Any application in year three will also need to be with Forester.
2. The use of up to three insecticides with different modes of action during crop establishment period will minimise any potential for pesticide resistance developing.

Note that this approval does NOT permit the application of Gazelle SG post planting.
