Future of forestry writing prize: enter now

6 November 2018

Confor has launched a writing competition designed to stimulate debate on the potential for forestry and wood processing to deliver a more sustainable society - and entries must be in by November 13th.

Industry professionals and students (aged 30 and under) have been invited to write a short essay about their vision of the future - with cash prizes of £500, £250 and £100 on offer for the three best entries.

The winners will be presented with their prizes at a reception hosted by the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Forestry at Westminster on the evening of 20th November. The competition is sponsored by Confor member Tilhill Forestry.

Entries of 500-1000 words should be sent to Eleanor Harris at Confor - eleanor@confor.org.uk - by 13 November, on this topic:

"How can forestry and wood processing help
deliver a Green Brexit and a more sustainable society in the UK?"

Illustrations, info-graphics and other visual tools can be used.

"It's a time of great change - and of tremendous opportunity - for our sector, a once-in-a-generation opportunity to make a real difference," said Confor Chief Executive Stuart Goodall. "We know there is a lot of great thinking going on among young forestry and wood professionals and we want to unlock that."

George McRobbie, Managing Director of Tilhill Forestry, said: “Our young forestry and wood professionals are the future for the forest industry and Tilhill Forestry will be actively encouraging our own graduates to contribute. I am really excited to hear the ideas that this competition has the potential to generate.”

Winners will be selected for the strength and substance of the idea and all writing styles, including blogs, are acceptable. The winning entry will feature on the Confor website and in its magazine Forestry and Timber News.

Environment Secretary Michael Gove has been invited to present the prizes (and to speak at the event) to reflect his desire for a Green Brexit.

The reception, organised by Confor for the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Forestry, will celebrate and reflect upon a very busy year for the industry and to look forward to 2019, including the centenary of the 1919 Forestry Act and the coming together of the forestry and wood processing sector with the merger of Confor and UKFPA.

To attend the event, in Terrace Dining Room B from 730pm-930pm on 20th November, email neil@publicaffairs.coop - and please encourage your young professionals to enter the competition.
