Role Purpose

You will play a leading role in sustainably managing an area of woodland of approx. 126,000 hectares, which is 6% the size of Wales.  In accordance with Wales’ world leading legislation on wellbeing and sustainability, our aim is for the Welsh Government Woodland Estate (WGWE) to model our vision for the sustainable management of natural resources and inspire others to do the same.  The Specialist Advisor Forest Planning will be the main provider of advice, direction and technical services for a key element, forest planning.   You will work as part of our central Land Stewardship Department and with colleagues in our integrated Place based teams who plan and deliver forest operations on the WGWE.  You will enable us all to work together to develop and then follow forest plans to make the WGWE the best it can be; storing carbon, creating resilient habitats, helping manage flood risk and safeguard clean water, providing beautiful places for recreation, producing a significant proportion of Wales’ timber to international certification standards, and getting everyone who works there home safe and well everyday. 

Qualifications and Skills

Knowledge of: Welsh, UK and EU legislation related to Sustainable Forest Management and Planning.  Welsh, UK Government policy drivers in Forestry; and the issues and opportunities in Wales. 

Experience of: technical analysis and interpretation of a range of complex environmental information and data sources; and analysing large data sets; 

Working with/in the forestry sector, local authorities, eNGOs, National Parks and other land managers; 

Working in a programme and project management environment with Project Management experience and/or qualifications. 

You will be a member of a relevant professional institution and/or working towards membership. 

Share your knowledge and expertise to help solve problems, supporting all Heads of Business in EPP as required;
