East England Region - Health & Safety Awareness Day

5 October 2017

The East England regional steering group is delighted to extend an invitation to a health and safety awareness meeting on 5th October 2017, to be held at the historic Boughton Estate in Northamptonshire by kind invitation of the Duke of Buccleuch.

Extending to 11,000 acres, Boughton includes let and in-hand farming units and 2,500 acres of woodland which is actively managed with both an in-house team of foresters and a wide selection of external contractors. Timber is sold into the wider market and also used within the Estate’s successful firewood and chip enterprises.

The seminar will be run by Jim Colchester, Head of Forestry for Buccleuch Estates, together with Jonathan Plowe,  Woodlands Operation Manager for Buccleuch South, both of whom have a very practical and deep understanding of the health and safety requirements of a modern forestry enterprise. Jim has been heavily involved with the Forest Industry Safety Accord (FISA) and works closely with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to improve the estate’s procedures. Both Jim and Jonathan are passionate about sharing their knowledge with the wider industry.

The aim of the meeting will be to look at live working examples in the forest where we will be guided through the process of health and safety management from the initial site assessment through to contract management and ongoing monitoring and improvements. Reference to FISA guidelines and what the HSE expects will be covered during discussions.

We will be meeting in Geddington Chase (post code NN14 1EB); access is from the A43 along a metaled track approximately ½ mile from Geddington Village. The event will be sign posted. Please bring the necessary outdoor clothing and footwear.

The afternoon will start at 2.00pm with tea and coffee.  The seminar will then commence at 2.30pm and will be finished and conclude at 5.00pm.  There is no cost to this event.

To secure your place, please book by 26th September. Bookings should be made using this booking form
