Confor visit to KREL

25 October 2017

Confor members visit to Kent Renewable Energy Ltd’s biomass CHP plant at Sandwich and Mersham Hatch Estate, Kent

On 25th October 2017 Confor members in the South East of England will have the opportunity to visit Kent Renewable Energy Ltd’s biomass CHP plant at Sandwich, Kent. This plant is supplying heat to Discovery Science Park as well as electricity for 50,000 homes. Discovery Park is one of Europe's leading science and technology parks. The plant is sourcing its fuel predominantly from local undermanaged broadleaved woodlands through Euroforest.

Members will also have the opportunity to visit Mersham Hatch Estate, roughly 3 miles South East of Ashford, Kent. The woodland compartments total 215ha and consist mainly of mature oak, sweet chestnut and mixed broadleaf stands. More recently conifer plantations have also been introduced. With Sandwich in such close proximity, the Estate is an ideal supplier for Biomass into KREL and this new opportunity has given rise to a new market for the Estates timber. Tilhill would like to show you around the Estate courtesy of Strutt & Parker to demonstrate how the woodlands are being managed to aid timber supplies into Sandwich.
