(On this page there are numerous links to FC webpages. Sometimes, these pages are changed and then these links will not work, in which case, readers are advised to go to the nearest generic page, eg, www.forestry.gov.uk/planthealth, which are fairly static. In addition, it should be noted that the status of several of these pests and diseases is changing rapidly and readers are advised to monitor relevant webpages frequently.)
There has been a rash of new pests and diseases threatening domestic forest tree species, several of which have the potential to devastate the forest industry, as well as the environment, especially when considered in totality. Researchers warn that global trade and climate change make it increasingly likely that new threats will continue to arrive. It is not possible here to cover all the current pests and diseases, or to provide comprehensive guidance, but this page gives a range of links for those seeking information, as well as, setting out ConFor's activity in respect of four:
Phytophthora ramorum
Acute oak decline
Red band needle blight
Pine tree lappet moth
A paper outlining the major forests pests and diseases (November 2009) was presented by FC to the Biosecurity Programme Board information paper. (Note, for current information it is essential to use FC and related websites, which are regularly updated.)
Any suspected cases of the above pests and diseases should be reported to Tree Health Diagnostic and Advisory service, using their standard report form
These threats (and others) have led to calls for foresters, contractors and woodland owners to give much greater consideration and priority to hygiene practices, making them routine. Simple measures such as cleaning tools and boots after leaving the woodland should become habit. http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-868egu
